Feyenoord fan lashes out at Ruben van Bommel
1 min readThe Philips Stadium was Sunday afternoon the setting for a rather unleashed PSV, which against FC Groningen showed what it will be able to do again this season.
The match against the northerners also played out on social media. That has to do with a moment involving Ruben van Bommel and referee Allard Lindhout. Did Ruben van Bommel escape a red card? In particular, fans of Feyenoord and Ajax think so.
Ruben van Bommel tried, in all his drive and diligence, to get the ball away from Groningen goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen, but instead he went hard at the well-performing goalkeeper of the North. The winger got a yellow card for that, and part of the Netherlands is not satisfied with that. “That filthy behavior of the father is also reflected a bit in the son,” someone posted on the social media platform X.
“What do you mean this isn’t a red card for Van Bommel? Really dirty, hard through on Vaessen”, someone says. “This is red for Van Bommel, though, right?”, another writes. “Do this somewhere else on the pitch and it’s a red. Red for Van Bommel not given… no surprise, because yes, PSV…”, a Feyenoord supporter of course writes, not entirely objective but above all frustrated and judging.

A Groningen supporter also didn’t seem to be able to appreciate it, that action by Van Bommel. “What a stunt. Bizarre. Why attack the goalkeeper like that?” Another FC Groningen fan writes: “Van Bommel is really far too good for his direct opponent. But he does take truly incomprehensible risks with that tackle on Vaessen", the commentary from Groningen said.
The majority of the reactions are purely positive towards Van Bommel, who played a very good match. “Wow, what wonderful runs from Van Bommel, what speed and power on the ball", a PSV fan posted. “It’s ‘only’ against Groningen but if I say who Ruben Van Bommel reminds me of on this flank… what a run", was the comment from another PSV fan. On X, PSV fans, FC Groningen and, of course, again also Feyenoord and Ajax don’t agree with each other.
