ESPN analyst: “I can imagine that, as a PSV supporter, you’re completely fed up with that guy.”

PSV in fact won easily at Woudesteijn, but up to and including the last minute it was still worth waiting to see what was left in the tank for the home side. Kovar once again made no great impression with the equalizing goal, and it also turns out this season to be a goalkeeper who can concede a goal at any moment.

The PSV defense, at any rate for the umpteenth time, did not keep a clean sheet and so, after the match, Ryan Flamingo was the subject of conversation. The defender even took a fair share of criticism in the studio. For example, Mario Been was absolutely not happy with the ruthlessness of Flamingo, who, according to Been, lacks it.

Hugo Borst can’t believe it either how Flamingo plays, while Marciano Vink takes up for him. Especially Flamingo’s role in Excelsior’s goal leads to arguments at the table on De Eretribune.

Flamingo lost in the second half a match with Casper Widell, after which Excelsior leveled it at 1-1. Been sees a lack of ruthlessness in Flamingo. "This is a matter of simply winning your duel, but Flamingo loses it here quite easily. I think he has to defend a bit further from the goal with these kinds of balls." According to Been, Flamingo should simply be more dominant in the center. "The fact that he loses this duel shows that he isn't really a tough defender."

Borst goes one step further and wonders whether a departure for Flamingo might be a good idea. "I can imagine that as a supporter you’re completely done with that guy. Who knows, maybe a new club would be good for him. For example Benfica, which may well have an interest", Borst points to the Portuguese top club, where they failed to land him over the past week.

Vink looks at Flamingo differently. "At the moment when Boscagli and Schouten were standing next to him in the center, Flamingo also showed that he could defend world-class strikers in large spaces on the pitch", says the analyst. Vink has still not forgotten the Champions League match against then Sporting Portugal striker Viktor Gyökeres, who now plays for Arsenal, and he still praises Flamingo for it.

"He is a player who needs confidence. I think that mistake from last week against Fortuna Sittard really got to him. It still weighs on him that he is too careless in those kinds of actions." He compares Flamingo to Frank de Boer. "This kind of little mistake was also made by the former defender, but De Boer was also tactically very smart and strong. Flamingo doesn’t have that. He’s more of a midfielder than a defender.”

"Ik kan me voorstellen dat je als PSV'er helemaal klaar bent met die gozer" lol, snap die frustratie wel. Maar als Been zegt "iets verder van de goal af", dan is het toch ook een taak van het team om de dekking te zetten? Flamingo is mid-gevoel, geen centrum-monster, tbh.

I think Hugo Borst goes a bit too far with the "maybe vertrek" angle. Vink said it well, he needs confidence and he can defend big spaces when the structure is right. But if he is losing 1v1s that close to goal, you simply cant afford that in a title race. 👀

"benfica interesse" is echt salami-geschiedenis tbh. Als iemand vertrouwen nodig heeft, dan moet PSV hem ook coachen en niet afmaken na 1 fout. Kovar bij de goal was toch ook niet lekker.

"helemaal klaar bent met die gozer" lol i get the frustration, but i also think PSV need to coach the balance better. If he is only effective next to Boscagli and Schouten, then we are basically building a defense around conditions.

🔥 Flamingo again... that duel vs Casper Widell and suddenly Excelsior is right back in it. tbh Mario Been is not wrong, you have to win those duels, period.

Idk, Flamingo stond er soms echt raar bij die tegentreffer. Maar die discussie in de studio gaat nu wel snel richting "vertrek" terwijl PSV ook gewoon kansen weggooit.
