ESPN analyst criticizes Van Nistelrooij: ‘Time for a fresh start and ideas’

1 min read

Former PSV coach Ruud van Nistelrooij will stay on as assistant national team coach in the technical staff of new national team manager Xavi Hernandez. Van Nistelrooij was also an assistant to Ronald Koeman during the most recent World Cup in North America, where Oranje were ultimately eliminated in the round of sixteen on penalties by Morocco.

ESPN analyst Anco Jansen, however, believes that the KNVB should part ways with the former PSV player. Jansen says this in the program Voetbalpraat on ESPN.

In addition, the former FC Emmen footballer points, among other things, to the recent World Cup. ''I think we have to get rid of Ruud van Nistelrooij, because if you’ve been an assistant with this Netherlands team, then you’ve also failed and you’re also to blame,'' the analyst begins.

Jansen then expresses his annoyance about the fact that the former top striker joined later, due to the celebration of his birthday. ''I still can’t let go of the fact that it also started with the fact that he was absent right before the World Cup. How the World Cup went… you have to let that go. Time for a new start and ideas,'' said the former footballer.

Then colleague analyst Marciano Vink joins the discussion. ''Clean house must be made and players should be thanked. It must be said: this is the way forward'', the analyst believes.

After that, the former PSV player continues. ''At the Euros, you went far because the draw turned out well, but the game didn't look good. We had a number of matches where we thought: there's something in it. Then we play a World Cup where we deny everything we stand for, with Morocco as the low point. Then I think that conclusions must be drawn. Whether Xavi does that with a Dutch assistant alongside him or hopefully with Spaniards sitting on his back, I think that's fine,'' Vink said.
