Dortmund | “They let Julian Brandt go, as if his time was up, and bought Veerman with more class and quality.”
1 min readBorussia Dortmund has made a strategic switch in midfield this transfer summer by taking Joey Veerman on for 22 million euros from PSV, after Julian Brandt left on a free transfer for Ajax. The incoming transfer from the Amsterdam club brings a lot of joy, especially among the supporters of Ajax.
Joey Veerman was allowed this summer to take the opposite route, and has now become a selection player for the millionaires' club from Dortmund, where it turned out they had already grown tired of Brandt.
Dortmund did not immediately allow Brandt to go "for nothing" to make room, but simply could not reach an agreement on a new contract. At least, that was what was claimed in the account shortly after his free transfer departure. Several German media know better and had previously written that Dortmund wanted to further narrow down the squad and wished to add a different type of midfielder. And so it happened, although €23 million had to be put on the table.
Veerman must be the new playing playmaker in midfield at Dortmund, a role that was previously largely filled by Brandt but not to the full satisfaction of the German club. It is therefore a deliberate reshaping of the midfield, enabled by the salary that became available through Brandt’s departure.

A long-time follower of the Bundesliga and also a PSV fan, thinks it’s all fine, that transfer of Brandt from Borussia Dortmund to PSV. On X, Dennis Creative mentions it: 'Make sense. They let Brandt go, who’s past his best, and they buy a midfielder who brings more quality and class right now. And for all delicate Ajax snowflake little darlings: I follow the Bundesliga, so I do know what I’m talking about', it says on X about Brandt.

The most telling bit is the role change: "nieuwe voetballende spelverdeler" die eerder door Brandt werd ingevuld.
