Don’t be impressed by the PSV player Aad de Mos: “He doesn’t have the fine technique either.”
1 min readAfter the departure of Luuk de Jong in the summer of 2025, Ricardo Pepi seemed to be the new first-choice striker of PSV. Due in part to a lot of injury trouble, Pepi has been going through an unfortunate period in Eindhoven for a while, and last season the American often had to make do with a place on the bench in favor of Guus Til.
Last weekend the deadlock also broke against Sparta Rotterdam as a substitute player in favor of Sven Mijnans. Mijnans was immediately worth gold for Peter Bosz’s side as the midfielder, who on paper was lined up as a striker, was good for a hat-trick.
That was also seen by analyst and former football coach Aad de Mos. According to De Mos, the American has it a lot tougher at PSV since De Jong left.
The analyst lets us know in a video item from the Eindhoven Dagblad featuring PSV watcher Rik Elfrink. ''In the past it was a bit easier for him. Luuk de Jong was done after about 60 to 75 minutes. The defense then is vulnerable and there were spaces from which he benefited,'' says De Mos.
Then the former coach points to Ajax and Feyenoord’s strikers. ''Tolu can keep the ball with him; in addition, he also has pace. He is extremely decisive. You see it with Ferri as well. He is a new kind of striker that is emerging in tiki-taka. Unless you’re called Barcelona, in which case you don’t need that,'' continues the native of The Hague.
According to the former coach of, among others, Ajax and PSV, the PSV forward falls short on those points. ''He also doesn’t have the delicate technique. Especially from the kick-off. From the start there are almost no spaces,'' De Mos said.

Wie kiest er nou steevast voor een reservespits-setup als Sparta komt? Mijnans is goud, maar Pepi als back-up blijft imo te vaak "net niet". Dat De Mos het vanaf de aftrap noemt, daar heb ik wel een gevoel bij. ⚽
Goeie analyse, maar ik vond het wel opvallend dat hij het zo breed trekt naar Ajax en Feyenoord. Pepi is juist meer ploegspits dan die tiki-taka-achtige types, dus misschien ligt het niet alleen aan zijn techniek. Al klopt zijn punt wel, als vanaf de aftrap alles dicht zit, ga je het verschil niet maken.
"Er zijn vanaf het begin bijna geen ruimtes" tbh dat is precies wat ik ook zie. Met Til en later Mijnans heb je andere dreiging, Pepi moet dan ineens meer voetballen en minder hopen op gaten. Misschien moet hij starten en direct de 1-2's zoeken, anders blijft het vuurwerk uit.
Eens met het punt van Tolu en Ferri, maar dat vergelijking voelt ook alsof Ajax en Feyenoord gewoon beter passen bij dat type spits. Bij Pepi willen we snelheid en diepte, terwijl zijn kwaliteiten juist meer in het afmaken op timing zitten. 👀
"Hij heeft ook niet de fijne techniek" bro, bij PSV wordt een spits ook gesloopt door de opbouw. Je krijgt geen vrije man, geen second balls, en dan moet je ineens Barca-achtige acties doen. 🤡
Ik vind het oneerlijk om alles op Pepi te schuiven. Dat De Mos zegt dat ruimtes wegvallen na het Luuk-vertrek, klopt, maar ik vraag me af waarom Bosz dan niet structureel anders laat aanvallen. Dit seizoen oogt het zo vaak net te voorspelbaar.
Mijnans op papier spits en dan meteen een hattrick, ja dat zegt genoeg. Pepi begint elke keer alsof hij nog moet opwarmen, en als er geen ruimtes zijn wordt het echt lastig voor hem. 🔥
Ik snap De Mos wel, want Pepi lijkt nu altijd te wachten op ruimte die er bijna niet komt. Als Mijnans tegen Sparta echt het verschil maakt, zegt dat toch genoeg over hoe Bosz het aanvalsspel wil dragen. Pepi moet meer aan de bal zijn, anders komt hij te kort.
Aad de Mos is weer lekker hard. Pepi scoort niet en dan hoor je ineens "geen fijne techniek"... maar tbh ik snap ook wel dat de ballen vanaf de aftrap niet eens fatsoenlijk bij hem aankomen.
