Does NEC point to PSV? “Agreements were breached”
1 min readIt doesn’t seem to have gone quite right in Nijmegen, that multi-million deal with PSV, with which a profit of about 14.5 million was made. The Japanese player, after all, was taken over for only about €200,000. It has been an unsettling week for NEC; that much is certain.
Recently, the Nijmeegse club still put in its two cents about how things were handled. Because around the transfer of Kodai Sano to PSV, agreements were breached, NEC director Wilco van Schaik says in an interview with ESPN. The midfielder was initially said not to leave yet, but eventually he did. Were agreements actually breached, or is it all not as bad as it seems?
"We had agreed with everyone that Sano would play two more matches. Everyone knew that", says Van Schaik. Both the management of the Japanese player and PSV were aware of that agreement. "Everyone knew about it. That was simply the agreement", emphasizes the executive.
The two clubs were still in talks about the point at which the transfer would be finalized, but still Sano decided to leave for Eindhoven early. "We had agreed with him that after Hoffenheim, a transfer that was very close and that he found very disappointing that it didn’t go through, he would cooperate."
"Also to help him, because if Carlos Aalbers (technical director) had waited longer, we could have earned even more. But you also have to deal with a player who has helped us in the winter by staying", Van Schaik said. "He didn’t flinch at all. So we said we would cooperate, even when it comes to clubs of this kind."
After a transfer to Hoffenheim fell through, it was agreed that Sano would first complete the two matches against Olympiakos and only then was he allowed to leave. "Then all kinds of things happen, and on that morning everything comes together." The midfielder spoke with Dick Schreuder, who then consulted with Van Schaik and Aalbers.
"We brought Kodai in, and it was pretty clear that it was no longer going to work." Hans Kraay junior then adds that the 22-year-old midfielder may have been coached from the outside not to play anymore. "He’s a young boy. In football we can find all kinds of things to say about it, but this happens more often," Van Schaik replies. Jan de Jong then calls it the ugly side of football.
On match day, it became clear that Sano’s head was no longer in the game against Olympiakos (0-0). "Dick was very clear: out of the group. ‘Not because you’re a nasty little guy, but this decision disappoints us’", says Van Schaik. The NEC director then phoned the agent of the Japanese player to inform him that Sano had to leave the Nijmegan club. Not long after, Sano traveled to Eindhoven to complete his transfer to PSV. Last Saturday, Sano was presented as PSV’s newest signing.

"De lelijke kant van het voetbal." Daar ben ik het deels mee eens. Alleen: als een club afspreekt dat een speler nog helpt en hij geeft geen weerstand, dan sta je alsnog met je rug tegen de muur. Ik ben benieuwd of dit juridisch ook echt 'schending' is of vooral een conflict over timing.
14,5 miljoen winst en dan toch zeggen dat er afspraken zijn geschonden, dat is wel heel krom. Als ze al wisten dat PSV meehielp na Hoffenheim, dan zat de route toch al in de planning. Wat overblijft is vooral reputatieschade en gedoe. 🤡
"Niet omdat je een naar ventje bent, maar deze beslissing stelt ons teleur" ... fair, maar tbh het is ook ploeg-discipline. Als je middenvelder de focus kwijtraakt, moet Schreuder ingrijpen. Ik ben benieuwd hoe PSV dit gaat verantwoorden.
idk, klinkt meer als 'we wilden hem nog even cashen' dan als 'PSV heeft hem getikt om te stoppen'. Sano zegt niks, en op het veld zie je ook gewoon dat hij mentaal uitgeschakeld was. 💀
Die zin "Aalbers langer had gewacht, hadden we nog meer kunnen verdienen" zegt genoeg. Dus NEC vond het te versnellen, maar Sano stopte toch met meedoen. Dat is dan pijnlijk voor jullie, maar ook gewoon voetbalpolitiek.
Die quote "We hadden met iedereen afgesproken dat Sano nog twee wedstrijden zou spelen" is hard. Maar als PSV en het management het wisten, dan ligt de schuldvraag eerder bij de timing tussen de clubs, niet bij PSV alleen. Toch snap ik die frustratie bij NEC wel.
Bro, Kraay junior met "ingefluisterd" is natuurlijk speculatie, maar het verhaal van "uit de groep" op de wedstrijddag is wel hard. Wat ik dan vraag is: was die transfer al beklonken, of is NEC gewoon te laat in het hele proces?
Tbh dit is precies waarom je bij transfers altijd side-eye krijgt. Als Dick Schreuder zegt "uit de groep" dan was het ook intern al duidelijk dat het niet meer klopte. Maar PSV moet wel waken hoe ze met zulke situaties omgaan.
tbh 200.000 winst met een miljoenendeal klinkt alsof NEC achteraf het verhaal wat aan het bijschaven is. Als hij tot en met die afspraken speelde, dan is het gewoon voetbalbusiness. Anders is het echt zuur, maar PSV kan er weinig aan doen dat een transfer ineens schuift.
Die 200.000 euro voor een speler die nog "twee wedstrijden" moest spelen... dat voelt echt als een kapotte deal. Hopelijk legt PSV dit straks netjes uit, want dit ruikt naar druk van buitenaf.
Als NEC zegt afspraken geschonden, oké maar in de kern voelt het alsof ze vooral waarde proberen te beschermen. Sano wilde weg na dat Olympiakos-gedeelte, en PSV neemt hem dan toch gewoon mee. ⚽
