Despite a strong showing, questions remain about a PSV fan’s call: ‘Has Noa Lang and Steven Bergwijn already been passed?’

Ruben van Bommel may be preparing to make his debut for Oranje. That would mean the PSV player would succeed his father after fourteen years.

Father Mark, currently the head coach of Belgium, namely played fourteen years ago his last international match for the Netherlands team. With Van Bommel as captain, the Netherlands under the leadership of Bert van Marwijk lost 1-2 to Germany during the second group match at the 2012 European Championship in Poland & Ukraine.

Between 2000 and 2012, the former midfielder appeared for Oranje a total of 79 times, with the exception of the period after the 2006 World Cup up to the 2008 European Championship. This was because the PSV icon had developed a strained relationship with the then national team coach Marco van Basten, which is why Van Bommel decided not to make himself available for the Netherlands national team as long as Van Basten was coach.

Despite the fact that his son Ruben has made a strong comeback after his serious injury from last season, former footballer Eljero Elia believes that the invitation to Oranje is still too soon for the current PSV player. Elia says this in the program Rondo on Ziggo Sport.

The former wing forward is positive about the development of Van Bommel. ''I think it's very impressive what he has shown in such a short time. He may still show a bit more sometimes with an individual action with a scissor kick. He is doing a lot now on speed and power, but he is doing his thing. He is dangerous, has threat, scores and provides assists'', says the former footballer, among others from FC Twente and Feyenoord.

Yet Elia still thinks that a call-up for Oranje is coming too soon. ''Has he already passed Noa Lang and Steven Bergwijn? Bergwijn has not been given another chance anymore. I think he still has not passed Lang and Bergwijn'', says the former international, who played in the 2010 World Cup final.

Wim Kieft has mixed feelings. ''It’s a player who is incredibly direct. Direct to the goal, danger, speed. He has one standing in front of him who is already a couple of years ahead. The Gakpo from PSV in his last year is he not yet. That’s what he has to take on'', Kieft said.

Tim Krul, on the other hand, is pleased that the current PSV player is allowed to show his qualities. ''He has the temperament of his father. There’s fire in him. I think it’s great that he gets a chance'', Krul concludes.

Goated take van Elia toch.
