Amazement at former PSV player: “He has control of the ball”
1 min readNetherlands played to a 2-2 draw with Greece on Thursday evening. At halftime, Oranje were facing a 2-0 deficit.
Through goals by captain Virgil van Dijk and substitute Tijani Reijnders, the Netherlands national team fought its way back against the Greeks. This prevented the first defeat for head coach Xavi Hernandez.
With a score of 2-1, former PSV player Denzel Dumfries seemed to have already brought it to 2-2, but this goal was ruled out after a VAR intervention for offside. This left ESPN analysts Kees Kwakman and Danny Koevermans, also a former PSV player, baffled.
''But also UEFA mafia, huh. There is already a second goal disallowed. First against Germany and now again. The second one by Dumfries was correct. It makes absolutely no sense. That boy takes the ball and thinks: I’m going to do a trick. Then it’s said that Dumfries was offside. That is not what this rule is intended for'', Kwakman begins in the program Voetbalpraat on ESPN.

After that, Koevermans, who is also active as an amateur referee, joins in. ''Dumfries heads the ball. Then there is a header duel between a centre-back and Meerdink; then the ball apparently comes off Meerdink, which is questionable. Then the ball falls to a defender of Greece. He has the ball under control; he can clear the ball or play it to a teammate—those are all criteria that matter, which means it becomes a new situation'', says De Koef.
Then the former footballer continues. ''He has control of the ball. Everything was geared toward the fact that you would approve the goal. He wanted to beat Dumfries at the back line. Dumfries wins the ball back, just a new situation. So just a valid goal. But then there is again a VAR van and they give each other a high-five. Then there is again something to disallow a goal'', said Koevermans.
